Does a green Tailscale admin dot mean I’ll get alerted?

No. Opening the Tailscale admin and staring at a green dot isn't the same as getting told when the box dies. You want an email when the machine stops checking in, using something like Healthchecks.io. To prove it works, unplug the box once on purpose, wait for the email, then plug it back in. That email only means the box stopped checking in — it doesn't prove Tailscale or a camera app is healthy.

Will this work with Ring / cloud cameras?

No. Cloud cameras aren't the box — you need something you can install Tailscale on, like a shop PC, Pi, or an NVR/PC you admin.

When the box goes dark

You've got a PC or a Pi that runs cameras, files, whatever — it's supposed to stay on. Then one night you can't get in, and you don't know if the machine died, the Wi‑Fi blinked, or Tailscale just logged you out.

I've driven across town for all three of these. Only one of them actually needed the drive.

Same feeling, three different problems

The box is dead. Power's off, the disk is full, or the OS is wedged. Nothing on that machine answers. Rebooting your laptop won't help, and neither will waiting.

The path is flaky. The box itself is fine — the shop Wi‑Fi or the ISP isn't. It works, then it doesn't, then it works again. The classic after-dinner problem.

Tailscale auth is dead. The machine's on. You can sit in front of it and log in. From your phone off-site? Nothing. The node needs a fresh login, or it got disabled.

Treat all three like "the VPN is broken" and you'll reinstall Tailscale until you're furious, still not knowing whether the hardware's even alive.

What I check before I leave the couch

Power and local life. Are the lights on? Is there a local screen? Can someone on-site touch the keyboard? If not, assume it's a dead box until proven otherwise.
Whole-site internet. Are phones on the shop Wi‑Fi failing too? If so, fix the path first — don't blame Tailscale yet.
Box alive locally, dead remotely. That's usually auth. Sign Tailscale back in on the machine that's still running.
